Getting married in Ireland is a journey of both heart and logistics. As a local celebrant based in Clare, I am here to help you navigate the paperwork so you can focus on the "I Do."
Your Legal Guide: How to Marry in Ireland
Whether you are a local couple or planning a romantic elopement from overseas, the legal process is the same for everyone.
1. For Those Living in Ireland
If you are resident in Ireland, your first step is time-sensitive:
The 3-Month Rule: You must give at least 3 months' notice to the HSE Civil Registration Service.
Book Early: Appointments can fill up quickly, so book your "Marriage Notification" as soon as you have a date.
The Meeting: Both partners must attend in person to sign a declaration that there is no legal reason you cannot marry.
Fee: There is a standard non-refundable notification fee of €200.
2. For Those Eloping to Ireland
Ireland has no residency requirements, making it a perfect spot for an elopement.
Postal Notification: If you live abroad, you can often submit your notification by post.
Mandatory Visit: You must still meet the Registrar in person at least 5 days before your wedding to finalize the paperwork.
Documents: You will need valid passports, original birth certificates, and, if applicable, authenticated divorce decrees from your home country.
The Famous "Green Folder" (MRF)
The most critical item for your wedding day is the Marriage Registration Form (MRF), which is typically issued to you in a distinctive green folder after your HSE appointment.
Essential Advice for the Green Folder:
Do Not Forget It: You cannot be legally married without this physical document present at the ceremony.
The Signing: During the ceremony, you, your two witnesses (over 18), and I will all sign the MRF.
Return It: You must return the signed form to a Civil Registration Office within one month to officially register your marriage.
Where Can I Legally Marry You?
As a registered solemniser, I have the flexibility to marry you in many beautiful locations, provided they meet these legal criteria:
Public Access: The venue must be open to the public without a fee.
Identifiable: It must have a postal address or be a clearly identifiable landmark.
Dignified: The space must be deemed "seemly and dignified" for a ceremony.
From historic Clare ruins with a postal address to elegant manor hotels, we can find the perfect spot that reflects your style.
Steps to Take Now
Choose Your Date & Venue: Ensure the venue meets the legal requirements.
Book Your Solemniser: Verify they are on the official Register of Solemnisers.
Contact the HSE: Book your notification appointment immediately.
Gather Documents: Start collecting birth certificates and proof of address early.
Ready to start your journey? I would love to help you create a ceremony as unique as your love story.
